e2v manufactures EEV brand Klystrons, Inductive Output Tubes (IOTs) and water-cooled high-efficiency Energy-Saving-Collector IOTs (ESCIOT®s), along with thyratrons used in crowbar protection circuitry, for high power analogue and digital UHF TV transmitters.
Klystrons have been used in analogue television transmitters for decades, but were superseded by e2v’s higher efficiency Inductive Output Tube (IOT) in the 1980s. An IOT powered transmitter uses typically half the electricity of the klystron transmitter it replaced. These savings were even greater with the advent of digital transmission, where although theoretically possible to convert an old klystron-powered transmitter to digital use, its efficiency fell even further and was uneconomical to attempt.
Subsequently a higher efficiency IOT, the ESCIOT®, introduced water cooled energy saving collector technology to high power digital transmitters and increased savings further.
